Green Day lead singer and American Idiot co-author Billie Joe Armstrong revealed he's open to the idea of penning an original musical with the help of Idiot director Michael Mayer, according to the New York Times. "I think I’d be interested in the future of really getting into writing specifically for a show," said Armstrong, who has been appearing on Broadway as St. Jimmy in the rock opera inspired by his band's hit album.
"The kind of music that I like is very immediate and very catchy, and you identify with it quickly, and I try to write that way," he said. "And in musical theater it’s the same thing: You identify with the songs immediately, the good ones anyway." While the pair admits they don't have any specific concepts in mind, Mayer joked, "We’ve got a little Rolodex we go through."
A film adaptation of the Tony-nominated musical is also in consideration. Armstrong and Mayer declined to reveal any involved parties (Tom Hanks' production company Playtone has previously expressed interest) but Mayer said, "We’re definitely in talks. There are people who have the ability to make it happen, who have expressed genuine interest in it, and we want to do it, so I think it could happen." So, would Armstrong reprise his role as an alluring drug dealer on the big screen? "I think that’s a no-brainer," Mayer cracked.
