Kyle Dean Massey (Next to Normal, Wicked) and Jenn Colella (Urban Cowboy, High Fidelity) are among the cast for the forthcoming off-Broadway musical premiere of Lucky Guy. Written and directed by Willard Beckham, the show will begin previews on April 28 and open on May 19 at the Little Shubert Theatre. Lucky Guy will play a 12-week limited engagement, through July 24.
In addition to Massey and Colella, Lucky Guy will star Leslie Jordan (My Trip Down the Pink Carpet, TV’s Will & Grace), Varla Jean Merman (a.k.a. Jeffery Roberson, of Chicago and TV’s Ugly Betty), Jim Newman (Curtains, Steel Pier) and Savannah Wise (Rock of Ages, Ragtime).
Lucky Guy is set in Nashville, a town full of colorful characters all chasing after the very same dream: a smash hit record. To beat the odds and strike gold (or, better yet, platinum), it takes one great song, talent or luck, and preferably all three. Featuring an array of musical styles including country, Broadway, vaudeville, bluegrass, pop and Hawaiian, Lucky Guy weaves a tale of dreamers and schemers all willing to do whatever it takes to come out on top in the cut-throat world of Music City, USA.
The Lucky Guy creative team includes Rob Bissinger (set design), Paul Miller (lighting design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Kurt Fischer (sound design), Todd Ellison (orchestrations and musical supervision) and A.C. Ciulla (choreography). The show is being produced off-Broadway by Avid Theatricals.
