Director Bartlett Sher's previously announced revival of Funny Girl will play Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre January 15 through February 26, 2012 as part of the 2011-2012 season. No casting has been announced for the Broadway-Bound production, which will be presented by the Center Theatre Group.
The production is aimed at Broadway (which would mark the first ever Great White Way revival of the musical), but the CTG's artistic director Michael Ritchie told the Los Angeles Times there are no set plans for a transfer. "It's our expectation and hope that there will be a demand for a further life, and Broadway is the next step, but there is nothing specifically planned," he said.
Featuring music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Isobel Lennart, Funny Girl opened on Broadway on March 26, 1964, starring Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice and Sydney Chaplin as her true love, Nick Arnstein. The show ran at three theaters for a total of 1,348 performances, closing on July 1, 1967. Memorable songs include “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star” and “People.”
Also scheduled for the Ahmanson's Theatre season are touring productions of Bring It On (October 30-December 10), American Idiot (March 13- April 22), Fela! (April 5-June 3) and War Horse (June 13-July 22).
