Given the amount of time Broadway actors spend at work, it’s no surprise that they enjoy a good joke—often at a co-worker’s expense! In celebration of April Fool’s Day, Broadway.com asked some of our favorite stars to share their funniest work-related pranks. In some cases, the stars initiated the practical joke; in others, the joke was on them. Read on for true tales of behind-the-scenes tomfoolery.
NICK ADAMS (Adam in Priscilla Queen of the Desert)
"It didn’t really start as a prank, but when I was performing on The Today Show and was dressed in full-on Priscilla drag, as we were waiting to go on live, a woman standing behind me in the crowd kept saying out loud, 'Excuse me sir, sir…can I take a picture, excuse me sir, sir …' I had a feeling she was talking to me, but not being certain I just kept focusing on getting ready to go on. Cut to a minute later, and I heard someone say to her, 'No, that’s a ma’am, not a sir.' So she then said, 'Excuse me ma’am, may I take a picture?' At that point, I found it so funny that I had to turn around and oblige. She even apologized for thinking I was a man! Afterward you could hear the husband say to the wife, 'See I told you that was a woman,' so I guess the prank was on them. Pretty hilarious, and thank you to my makeup team for making it possible!"
