American Idiot's Justin Guarini will continue to rock onstage after the show's April 24 closing: The American Idol vet will play Roger opposite Paul Iacono as Mark in Rent at the Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, New Jersey. The production is set to run from May 28 through June 19, directed and choreographed by Jen Bender. Further casting will be announced at a later date.
Guarini currently stars in American Idiot as Will. He made his Broadway debut earlier this season in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Iacono is best known as the star of MTV's The Hard Times of RJ Berger. His off-Broadway credits include Landscape of the Body and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs.
Featuring a score and book by the late Jonathan Larson, Rent follows a group of young, eccentric New Yorkers as they struggle with love and loss during the height of the AIDS epidemic. The show first premiered off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop on January 26, 1996. The musical then transferred to the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996 where it ran for 12 years before closing on September 7, 2008. An off-Broadway mounting of the musical is set to begin July 14 at New World Stages.
Bender's Jersey shore production of Rent will features music direction by Jeremy Randall.
