The latest bit of Rock of Ages film casting gossip is that pop superstar Katy Perry will play a sexy barmaid and exotic dancer alongside real-life husband Russell Brand as narrator/club employee Lonny. According to London’s Daily Star website, Brand is “days away” from signing on to appear in the film, which will star Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Alec Baldwin as rock club owner Dennis Dupree, Julianne Hough as Kansas-transplant Sherrie, Mary J. Blige as strip club owner Justice and Paul Giamatti as the manager of Stacee’s band. The role of Drew will be played by 20-year-old newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta.
Perry is expected to step away from her “Teenage Dream” concert tour to shoot scenes for Adam Shankman’s film version of the 80s Broadway musical, which will begin filming in Miami on May 19.
Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where small town girl Sherrie meets a big city rocker at the Bourbon Room, L.A.’s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The Broadway musical, which re-opened on March 24 the Helen Hayes Theatre, received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009.
The site quoted MiG Ayesa, who is playing Stacee on Broadway, on a recent visit by Cruise to study his performance: “Think of Tom’s character in Interview with a Vampire and how he devoured women. He will do this part exactly as brilliantly, except without fangs.”
