The Tony-winning Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles has set a closing date of May 1 at the Longacre Theatre. The show, which now stars librettist Harvey Fierstein as Albin and Christopher Sieber as Georges, will have played 433 performances and 15 previews upon closing. Terry Johnson’s production will launch a national tour in October in Des Moines, IA.
Although Fierstein and Sieber received glowing reviews for their pairing, the production never rebounded after the departure of Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge on February 13 and Jeffrey Tambor’s subsequent one-week run as Georges. Set in a nightclub on the French Riviera, La Cage aux Folles features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and book by Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret.
In addition to Fierstein and Sieber, the cast currently includes Mike McShane as M. Dindon/M. Renaud, Veanne Cox as Mme. Dindon/Mme. Renaud, Chris Hoch as Francis, Heather Lindell as Anne, A.J. Shively as Jean-Michel, Christine Andreas as Jacqueline, Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Jacob, Ashley Kate Adams as Colette, Michael Lowney as Etienne and Bruce Winant as Tabarro.
