Matthew Broderick won one of his two Tony Awards in 1995 for his performance as ambitious junior executive J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Sixteen years later, the show is back on Broadway, starring Daniel Radcliffe. So, will Broderick check out the latest revival of the Frank Loesser classic? “I would love to,” he told Broadway.com on opening night of Catch Me If You Can. “I was busy and I couldn’t go to the opening, but I’m going to go. It’s such a good show, and I loved doing it.”
When Broderick takes an aisle seat at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, his companion, as at Catch Me If You Can, will be his theater-loving eight-year-old son, James Wilkie. “He’s looking forward to How to Succeed, so we’ll definitely go see that together,” the actor said.
Broderick hasn’t tackled a musical in the decade since his Tony-nominated performance in The Producers. But he’d be open to singing on the Broadway stage again. “You know, it’ll happen,” he said, without specifying any dream projects. “I hope it does happen.” Fans will recall that Sarah Jessica Parker assumed the role of secretary Rosemary Pilkington opposite her future husband in How to Succeed after original star Megan Mullally left the show. But when asked what it would take to get her back on the Broadway musical stage, Parker smilingly demurred, “I’m a great audience.”
