Academy Award nominee Chris Sarandon, Broadway vet Jason Butler Harner and Ben Rosenfield will join previously announced star Carey Mulligan in the Atlantic Theater Company's upcoming production of Through a Glass Darkly. Directed by David Leveaux, the Jenny Worton adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's film begins performances on May 13 at New York Theatre Workshop (during renovation of Atlantic's off-Broadway home) ahead of a June 6 opening. The limited engagement runs through July 3.
Through a Glass Darkly follows a mentally ill woman (Mulligan) on vacation with her husband (Harner), father (Sarandon) and brother (Rosenfield) as the men struggle with how to confront her diminishing grip on reality. Bergman's 1961 film starred Harriet Andersson and Max von Sydow and received an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film. Worton's adaptation debuted at the Almeida Theatre in London in June 2010.
Sarandon's Broadway credits include Cyrano de Bergerac, The Light in the Piazza, Nick & Nora, Censored Scenes From King Kong, Two Gentleman From Verona and The Rothschilds. He has appeared off-Broadway in The Devil's Disciple, The Woods and Marco Polo Sings a Solo. He received an Academy Award nomination for Dog Day Afternoon. His many other TV and film credits include Child's Play, The Princess Bride, Judging Amy and Felicity.
Harner appeared on Broadway in The Coast of Utopia and in the West End's Serenading Louie. His off-Broadway credits include Our Town, Hedda Gabler, The Paris Letter, Orange Flower Water, The Gingerbread House, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme and The Ruby Sunrise. He has appeared in the films Changeling, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and The Good Shepherd.
Through a Glass Darkly marks the off-Broadway debut for Rosenfield, who recently starred in the film The Virgins.
The production will feature scenic design by Takeshi Kata, costumes by Jess Goldstein, lighting by David Weiner and original music and sound design by David Van Tieghem.
