Broadway sweethearts Sutton Foster and Bobby Cannavale are coming off a big week: Both opened in shows that require them to remain onstage for much of the running time, anchoring the proceedings and sharing scenes with every other actor. The similarities would seem to end there: She’s playing nightclub singer Reno Sweeney in the classic Cole Porter musical Anything Goes; he’s an ex-addict just out of prison in the decidedly R-rated comedy The Motherf**ker With the Hat.
But Cannavale begs to differ! “Our shows are very similar,” he told Broadway.com, tongue firmly in cheek. “If you like Motherf**ker With the Hat, you should see Anything Goes. [Sutton] is the motherf**ker with the taps.”
Kidding aside, Foster and Cannavale, who co-starred in the off-Broadway play Trust last summer, are understandably proud of each other’s achievements (not to mention the great reviews they’re getting right now). “He’s the heart and soul of the play,” Foster told Broadway.com on Motherf**ker’s opening night. “I just think he’s an extraordinary actor, and he’s enormously inspiring to me on many levels.” Echoed Cannavale, “I’m really proud of her. It’s been an amazing week.”
