News recently broke that Tony winner Laura Benanti and the stars of NBC’s pilot The Playboy Club may have to show some skin should the series get picked up next season. Broadway.com caught up with Benanti to find out if TV viewers will be able to catch the her naked in their own homes anytime soon.
"We were all laughing about that," Benanti said about the proposed nudity clause. "I mean it’s NBC! What are they going to show? We did sign a release, but they have assured us that we are not going to be nude."
Not like Benanti would have any reservations. "You know what? I’ve done Gypsy. I’ve done Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. I’m like, 'Whatever. Everybody’s seen it.'" Benanti earned a Tony Award in 2008 for playing burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy and showed plenty of skin as sexy model Candela in Women on the Verge earlier this season.
Despite the raciness of the pilot, which follows a group of models at the famous Playboy magazine in the 1960s, Benanti thinks the series will make great television. "It was an incredible experience," she says of filming the pilot in Chicago. "It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done and I’m really proud of it. I think it’s really smart, interesting, dramatic and sexy…everything you’d want to see in a TV show."
Benanti will even get the chance to show off her incredible pipes. "I get to sing!" she exclaimed. "I’m playing a performer in the [Playboy] club and the Bunnies used to perform as well." The pilot will feature Benanti singing the classic songs "Sh-Boom" and "Chicago."
As for the show’s fate, Benanti said NBC will make a decision on whether or not to pick the series up by May 16. Good luck, Laura!
