The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Yul Vazquez
Nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play, The Motherf**ker With the Hat
“I am floored! My wife and I were asleep, the phone rang, and it was my manager [with news of the nomination]. My wife jumped up and down and then the dogs jumped on the bed and attacked me. We have two giant labs, and it was the best way you could find out, believe me. I feel so honored, I can’t even tell you. When you’re an actor for a living, you try not to expect too much, because you set yourself up for disappointment. But [the Tonys] are the pinnacle, the seal from the theater world. The gates have opened, and they’ve said, ‘Come in, young man!’ You know, people were gunning for this play—it’s a play with a sketchy title, a word you can’t say. All the guns were pointing at us. But now [with six Tony nominations], it’s like, ‘Hey, maybe we were supposed to be up here in midtown!’ It’s just unbelievable.”
