The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Josh Gad
Nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, The Book of Mormon
“It’s quite the morning! I didn’t really know that a phone could handle that much texting and phone calls, but apparently the iPhone is built for Tony nominations because it just kept ringing and buzzing. I thought it was going to explode. I was lying in bed with my little baby girl, burping her at the time my phone rang; it was my manager screaming. The baby started laughing, the dog started barking, my wife starts asking, ‘What’s going on?’ It was the perfect barrage of chaos to get the news. I’m so unbelievably proud that [co-star and fellow Best Actor nominee Andrew Rannells] and I can share this moment. We really do have a strong bond and almost have a brotherhood onstage and off. It’s so rewarding that neither of us were left out, and we can both go to the theater today and not have to apologize and say, ‘Sorry about the snub, but this is pretty amazing!’ My longtime friend of 13 years and my freshmen roommate from college [co-star and Tony nominee] Rory O’Malley and I also get to share this amazing moment together. The entire production really has put so much heart and soul into this peace; to be recognized by our colleagues like this is incredible.”
