The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
David Yazbek
Nominated for Best Original Score, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
“I am complacently pleased. I’ve been to this [Tony] rodeo several times; in a way, it’s nice to be nominated without having a show that’s currently running so I don’t have put 110 percent of my energy into promoting the show. This will be an opportunity to just sit back and go to a nice brunch or two and hang out with Patti [LuPone] and Laura [Benanti]. The most satisfying thing is that [the Best Score nomination] proves there were a lot of people who really loved the show. There’s been a lot of interesting post-buzz, people saying, ‘I loved this show! I don’t know why it closed.’ I can’t tell you how hard we worked on [the cast recording] because we knew that it was the vehicle to carry those incredible performances by our cast and orchestra, the best orchestra I’ve ever worked with. It makes me feel good about the future prospects for Women on the Verge.”
