The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Brian Bedford
Nominated for Best Actor in a Play, The Importance of Being Earnest
“It’s very exciting for me, as you can imagine. I kept waking up during the night thinking, 'I wonder what’s happening,' but you just never quite know. I was very pleased. It’s brilliant that we got nominated for Best Revival, as well, because I’m very, very proud of this production. It’s very much a company effort, so it’s a great feather in the cap of the whole company. I thought it might happen simply because we got reviews that we could have written ourselves! How did I celebrate? I had a cup of tea, dear. But I didn’t have a cucumber sandwich. I’ll probably have a walk in the park. Is this all very disappointing? Did you think I’d open a bottle of Champagne and then go to the Four Seasons for lunch? Ah, the glamour of a Broadway actor. You know, when you’re doing eight shows a week, that’s really all you can do.”
