The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Trey Parker
Nominated for Best Director of a Musical, Best Score and Best Book, The Book of Mormon
“We talked about getting up at 5:30 [West Coast time] and watching the announcements live, but Tuesdays are the nights we’re up all night finishing the new South Park episode so we had to sleep as late as we possibly could. I got out of bed and went on the Internet and just started scrolling down. I’m really happy about the nominations in all the other categories. It’s great to see Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells both nominated. Luckily, the South Park run ends the Wednesday before the Tonys, so I’m excited to get to see the whole Mormon family again and get dressed up with all my friends I’ve made from the show. I really miss those guys and having fun with them. This nomination means a lot to me and I really take it seriously. I probably won’t be wearing a dress to these awards. The biggest thing I was terrified going into the show was that we’d be up against [Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark composer and frequent South Park target] Bono. It sounded so right that Bono was going to take my Tony from me [laughs]. That would have been hilarious actually.”
