The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Matt Stone
Nominated for Best Score and Best Book, The Book of Mormon
“It’s a good day and good thing to wake up to. I’m in Los Angeles, so it was a little anticlimactic. I rolled over in bed, grabbed my laptop and looked on Google Alert. When I saw all those names of people that we’ve been working with who are a big part of why the show is good, that was the coolest thing. They don’t get quite the press or the splash that our names coming to Broadway did, but [co-composer Trey Parker and I] always said that this is the most collaborative thing we’ve ever done. I’m just so happy that it’s being recognized as a big team effort. I’m hoping that they’ve got some chicken with some shitty bok choy at the ceremony. I want some shitty awards chicken [laughs]. I’m really excited. It’s going to be a good time. It’ll be a party night with friends from other shows and people we've met along the way. It’s weird because Trey and I are the first people to give the middle finger to anybody, but we [didn't have to] with Broadway. People warned us the Broadway community is really snooty and elitist, but it hasn’t felt that way at all. Everyone has been really warm and inviting. It’s been really fun to come to New York and do this.”
