The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Casey Nicholaw
Nominated for Best Director and Choreograph, The Book of Mormon
“It’s been an awesome day. I watched the announcement on TV and it was amazing. Being like the papa of the cast, I was so excited for Andrew [Rannells], Josh [Gad], Nikki [James] and Rory [O’Malley]. It’s amazing for everyone. This is one of those shows where the stars just lined up and we were able to get all this. I’m just sorry that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are in a dark room right now working on their TV show and aren’t able to be here to experience this with everyone. They would love it. I think everyone is going to be walking on air at the theater tonight. Some of the cast is already there, and it’s so cute that they’re so excited to see each other. For me, the Tonys are exciting because it’s sort of a ‘pinch me’ moment. As a kid I remember all the show posters on my wall and programs in my room, so to be able to live this, you just have to soak it up and enjoy it. Your first nomination is always exciting, but it never gets different. Everyone wants to be loved and be acknowledged for the hard work they do. Both nominations have different energies to them. [Receiving a choreography nomination] feels more kid-like and [the director nomination] feels more adult like.”
