With summer wedding season just around the corner (and the Kristen Wiig comedy Bridesmaids hitting theaters this week), Broadway.com asked readers to choose your favorite Broadway musical bride of all time. The votes are in, and bells are ringing for The Drowsy Chaperone's Janet Van De Graaff, who landed in first place with 19% of votes. Sutton Foster earned a Tony nomination in 2006 for playing the glamorous movie star who decides to abandon her fame for a life of marital bliss.
Second place resulted in a tie between brides from two Tony-winning musicals. The Sound of Music's Maria and Company's Amy both earned 18% of votes. Mary Martin earned a Tony Award in 1960 for playing Music's singing nun, who leaves the convent behind to marry Captain Von Trapp. Beth Howland starred as Amy in the original 1970 production of Company, and sang the bride-to-be's iconic cold-feet-induced number "Getting Married Today."
Two other brides-to-be shared the third place spot: Mamma Mia!'s Sophie and Aida's Amneris. Both characters earned 11% of votes.
Thanks for voting!
