Mitt Romney Gets Book of Mormon Makeover on the Cover of Newsweek

According to Newsweek, America is having a “Mormon moment.” The news mag's current cover features the smiling head of presidential candidate Mitt Romney attached to the leaping body now familiar from the poster for the hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. Romney appears to be clad in costumer Ann Roth’s vision of the perfect Mormon missionary: short-sleeved white shirt, black tie, black pants and black lace-up shoes, with a copy of the holy book in his right hand.

The cover story paints a positive picture of this all-American religion, pointing out that two possible presidential candidates (Romney and Jon Huntsman Jr.) as well as Senate leader Harry Reid, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart, JetBlue Airways founder David Neeleman and even Glenn Beck (a convert) are Mormons.

A sidebar features a portrait of the stars and creators of The Book of Mormon, nominated for 14 Tonys Awards, including Best Musical. Praising its "tuneful score, blasphemous gags and sentimental appreciation for the psychological benefits of religious faith," Newsweek notes that Mormon is a favorite to win multiple Tonys on June 12.
