The off-Broadway production of The Sphinx Winx will play its final performance on June 19 at the Beckett Theatre on Theatre Row. The musical began performances on May 3 and opened on May 18, directed by Matthew Hamel.
Described as a musical comedy misinterpretation of the classic love triangle between Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony, The Sphinx Winx stars Bruce Sabath as Caesar, Bret Shuford as Marc Antony and Erika Amato as Cleopatra, with Rebecca Riker, Beth Cheryl Tarnow and Ryan Williams. An original cast recording of the show is “in the planning stages,” according to the closing notice.
The Sphinx Winx features book and lyrics by Philip Capice, Anne Hitchner and Robert Keuch and music by Kenneth Hitchner Jr. As the show begins, the kingdom of Egypt is horribly in arrears to the Roman government due to Caesar's frivolous spending on lavish gifts for his Queen of the Nile, and Marc Antony arrives to uncover the cause and mete out justice. When the court's Soothsayer mistakenly forecasts that Antony will fall in love with Cleopatra, he unwittingly sets into motion a series of comic events the likes of which won't be found in any history books.
