Steve Guttenberg and Marlo Thomas will return to Broadway in the forthcoming premiere of Relatively Speaking, a triple bill of one-act comedies by Ethan Coen, Elaine May and Woody Allen. The plays will begin previews on September 20 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and open on October 20, directed by John Turturro.
In addition to movie mainstay Guttenberg (who made his Broadway debut 20 years ago as a replacement in Prelude to a Kiss) and TV queen Thomas (who last appeared on Broadway in the 1994 revival of The Shadow Box), the ensemble cast will include Caroline Aaron (Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors), Bill Army, Lisa Emery (A Kind of Alaska), Ari Graynor (The Little Dog Laughed, Trust), Danny Hoch (Taking Over), Julie Kavner (The Simpsons, Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters), Fred Melamed (Coen’s A Serious Man) and Grant Shaud (TV’s Murphy Brown). Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Relatively Speaking is comprised of three one-act comedies springing from a different branch of the family tree. In Talk Therapy, Ethan Coen uncovers the sort of insanity than can only come from family. In George Is Dead, Elaine May explores the hilarity of death. And in Honeymoon Motel, Woody Allen invites you to the sort of wedding day you won’t forget. No announcement has been made regarding specific roles each actor will play in the three comedies.
The production will feature scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Donna Zakowska, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and sound design by Carl Casella.
Relatively Speaking is being produced on Broadway by Julian Schlossberg and Letty Aronson and co-produced by Edward Walson, Leroy Schecter and Roy Furman.
