After the New York state senate passed the Marriage Equality Bill Friday night, Broadway vet and recent Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris took to Twitter to share his excitement. "It PASSED," Harris wrote, "Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!"
Following the big news, a Twitter follower told Harris’ longtime partner and fellow Broadway alum David Burtka he should propose to his boyfriend, to which Burtka responded, "I've already [proposed], he said yes! Thank god!" Harris later clarified, via his own tweet, "David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago!” We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."
Big news though it may be, this is not the first big Twitter announcement for this theatrical power couple. In August 2010, the pair announced via tweet that they were expecting twins, and on October 12 welcomed Gideon Scott and Harper Grace into their lives. Soon after they tweeted an adorable family photo of Burtka and the new arrivals, which we shared with you here.
But don't count on a ceremony happening the minute the law goes into effect: On June 27, Harris issued a cautionary tweet: "Dear Media: Just because David and I will soon be able to marry in NY doesn't mean we are actively planning a wedding. Cart before horse." Stay tuned for more updates.
