After a two-show day, Broadway’s pet-owning performers love nothing more than coming home to their number one fan: a loyal four-legged friend. In honor of the annual Broadway Barks dog and cat adoption event, coming up on July 9 in Shubert Alley, we asked stage stars to show their puppy—and kitty!—love by telling us all about their furry pals.
JOEL GREY (Moonface Martin in Anything Goes)
What is your pet’s name and breed?
Miguelito, long-hair Chihuahua
How did your pet get its name?
He was named after my father, Mickey Katz. When my father worked in a nightclub in the 1940s, the Latin workers in the kitchen used to call him Miguelito Katz, and since my dog is Mexican, I thought it would be a good name.
What is your pet’s favorite pastime?
Eating, quietly begging for food and resting on my chest while I read.
Does your pet know any tricks?
Not one.
What’s the funniest thing your pet has done?
When he was about six months old, he barked and I looked at him and said, “What’s that?” And that was the last time I ever heard him bark.
What’s the naughtiest thing your pet has done?
Peed in various places.
Do you look like your pet?
Very much so, I hope. I would die to look like him!
