Benjamin Walker and Amanda Seyfried will star in an A-list staged reading of William Inge’s Bus Stop in August, according to the New York Post. Directed by Scott Ellis and produced by Paula Wagner, the former head of Tom Cruise’s production company, the reading is already generating talk of a Broadway transfer, though no announcement has been made.
Bus Stop takes place in a diner in rural Kansas, where stranded bus passengers are waiting out a sudden snowstorm. Walker (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) will star as young cowboy Bo Decker and Seyfried (Mamma Mia! film, HBO’s Big Love) will play aspiring singer Cherie. Tony winner Shuler Hensley will also take part in the reading.
Bus Stop premiered on Broadway in 1955, starring Kim Stanley, Albert Salmi and Elaine Stritch, and a 1996 Broadway revival co-starred Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker. A 1956 film adaptation starred Marilyn Monroe as Cherie.
