Tony nominee Colman Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys) will perform marriages onstage at the St. James Theatre on July 25 as part of Hair's previously announced celebration of the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York state. Domingo became ordained for the special occasion.
Among the three couples tying the knot are actress Terri White (Finian's Rainbow, Follies) and her partner, jewelry designer Donna Barnett. The couple previously held their own commitment ceremony onstage at the St. James during White's run in Finian's Rainbow in the fall of 2009. Also planning to marry are Ryan Dietz (Chess) and his partner, playwright Josh Levine, as well as Broadway stage doorman John Raymond Barker and his partner, Jujamcyn theater usher Jared Pike.
"This moment has been a long time coming and we are elated to be able to celebrate it with not just one, but three Broadway marriages," the non-profit marriage equality group Broadway Impact said in a statement. "We are grateful for our elected officials in New York who have made this possible, but we are also reminded that the overwhelming majority of same-sex couples throughout the nation are still unable to marry in their home states. We are committed to continuing to fight until we have achieved full marriage equality in all fifty states."
The ceremony will begin immediately following the evening performance of Hair.
