Lydia R. Diamond's Stick Fly, which will arrive on Broadway this fall with Grammy-winner Alicia Keys attached as a producer, will now permiere at the Cort Theatre instead of the previously announced Lyceum Theatre. The play will begin previews on November 18 with opening night set for December 8. Kenny Leon (Fences) will direct. No casting has been announced.
Stick Fly follows the gathering of an African-American family at their luxurious Martha's Vineyard vacation home. The play "is so beautifully written and portrays black America in a way that we don't often get to see in entertainment," Keys said in a statement. Stick Fly premiered at the Congo Square Theatre Company in Chicago in 2005 and has been produced at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, N.J., Arena Stage in Washington, Huntington Theater Company in Boston and Matrix Theatre Company in Los Angeles.
The project is a Broadway producing debut for Keys, who recently described the experience on her blog as “modern-day magic.”
