Tony winner Michael Cerveris is set to take on the role of Juan Peron in the upcoming Broadway revival of Evita, opposite previously announced stars Ricky Martin as Che and Elena Roger in the title role. Directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Rob Ashford, the production will play the Marquis Theatre beginning on a yet to be determined date in the spring of 2012. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Cerveris earned a Tony Award for Assassins and received additional nominations for Lovemusik, Sweeney Todd and The Who's Tommy. His other Broadway credits include In the Next Room...or the Vibrator Play, Hedda Gabler, Cymbeline and Titanic. He has appeared off-Broadway in Road Show, King Lear, Winter Time, Fifth of July and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Evita features a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and book and lyrics by Tim Rice. The story of the charismatic and glamorous first lady of Argentina, the show opened on Broadway in 1979 and won seven Tonys, including Best Musical and acting awards for original stars Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin. Bob Gunton created the role of Juan Peron.
