Few musicals have had the impact of Rent, the Pulitzer Prize-winning show by the late Jonathan Larson. The gritty rock musical, about a group of young people struggling to survive against odds like addiction and HIV in New York’s Alphabet City, debuted off-Broadway debut in 1996, transferred to Broadway and quickly developed an international following. After shuttering on Broadway in 2008, Rent is back in town at New World Stages, and Broadway.com headed to the off-Broadway venue to catch up with the revival cast. Click on to hear Adam Chanler-Berat, Matt Shingledecker and Annaleigh Ashford share their memories of growing up with Rent—and reveal the worst jobs they’ve taken to pay their own rent.
