Matt McGrath has been tapped to replace James Barbour as Frank ‘N’ Further in the Old Globe’s forthcoming production of The Rocky Horror Show. Barbour departed the production on August 18 due to complications with his wife’s pregnancy. Oanh Nguyen’s production will begin performances at the San Diego theater on September 15 and open on September 23, running through November 6.
McGrath is no stranger to flamboyant roles: He has played the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret and the title role in the off-Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He most recently appeared on the New York stage in Atlantic Theater Company’s acclaimed pair of Pinter plays, The Collection and A Kind of Alaska. Earlier in the summer, he directed Darrell Hammond in Tru at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY.
The cast of The Rocky Horror Show also includes Andrew Call (Eddie, Phantom), Jeanna de Waal (Janet), Sydney James Harcourt (Rocky), Nadine Isenegger (Columbia), Lauren Lim Jackson (Phantom), Kelsey Kurz (Brad), David Andrew Macdonald (Narrator, Dr. Scott), Anna Schnaitter (Phantom), Laura Shoop (Magenta), Kit Treece (Phantom) and Jason Wooten (Riff Raff).
Featuring music, lyrics and a book by Richard O'Brien, The Rocky Horror Show centers on Brad and Janet, a clean-cut young couple from the suburbs who get caught with a flat in the middle of nowhere and they seek help from the devilishly charming transvestite Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. What they discover in his mysterious laboratory is a time warp of sexual and scientific possibilities and, perhaps, true love.
The creative team includes Donyale Werle (scenic design), Emily Rebholz (costume design), Rui Rita (lighting design), Kevin Kennedy (sound design) and Aaron Rhyne (projection design).
