Matthew Broderick, Harvey Fierstein, Sutton Foster, Joel Grey, Bebe Neuwirth and Brooke Shields will join a 29-piece live orchestra as well as cast members from various Broadway shows to sing John Kander and Fred Ebb's "New York, New York" in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. The performance, billed as Broadway Unites: 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, is set for September 9 at 4PM in Duffy Square.
The event will also include speeches by Broadway League chairman Paul Libin, chairman of the Times Square Alliance Bob Wankel and My Good Deed, Inc. founders David Paine and Jay Winuk. NYPD officer Daniel Rodriguez will also perform "God Bless America."
The performance will be directed and choreographed by Denis Jones, with Phil Reno serving as musical director. Shortly after 9/11, many Broadway actors (including Broderick, Neuwirth and Shields) came together to sing "New York, New York." The anniversary event is meant to mirror the original tribute.
