Follies is back on Broadway, in all its glory: Forty years after its initial bow, Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s musical is set to open at the Marquis Theatre on September 12 with a cast led by Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein and Ron Raines. Eric Schaeffer directs the lavish revival, which is transferring to the Great White Way from the Kennedy Center.
Follies is a moving look at the power of memory and the effects of “the road not taken.” Set at a reunion of the Weissman Follies, the show centers on Phyllis (Maxwell) and Sally (Peters) and the men they fell in love with as young showgirls in New York, dashing Ben (Raines) and down-to-earth Buddy (Burstein). The Broadway revival features a 28-piece orchestra performing Sondheim's score using Jonathan Tunick’s original orchestrations.
