Stage ghosts and the glamour of a bygone era are haunting Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, where Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s Follies is in residence. Retired showgirl Sally Durant Plummer (Bernadette Peters), her once-bosom buddy Phyllis Rogers Stone (Jan Maxwell), and the stage door Johnnys they eventually married (Danny Burstein and Ron Raines) are reuniting with their co-stars on the stage of a now-crumbling theater. Broadway.com resident artist Justin ‘Squigs’ Robertson set pen to paper to capture the fading glory of these Follies stars, along with the four fresh faces who play their young, hopeful selves of 30 years earlier (Lora Lee Gayer, Kirsten Scott, Christian Delcroix and Nick Verina). Take in this fabulous portrait, then see these stars and many more on the other side of the footlights.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home. Click to e-mail Squigs. Photo by Matthew Murphy
