Performances begin on September 22 for the Broadway premiere of Katori Hall's The Mountaintop, starring Oscar nominees Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. Directed by Kenny Leon, the play will open on October 13 at the Jacobs Theatre.
"I'm excited about the audiences every night," Jackson—who returns to Broadway for the first time since serving as an understudy in 1990's The Piano Lesson—told Broadway.com.
The Mountaintop is set on April 3, 1968, the night before the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King (Jackson). After delivering his legendary “I've Been to the Mountaintop” speech, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious young woman named Camae (Bassett) delivers room service, King is forced to confront his past, as well as his legacy to his people.
"There are very few people like him," Bassett said of Dr. King. "Very few people have that type of selflessness and courage."
