Jeff Talbott’s The Submission, a funny and frank new play about issues of cultural ownership, celebrates its opening night at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on September 27. Broadway favorite Jonathan Groff and True Blood star Rutina Wesley lead this four-hander, along with Eddie Kaye Thomas and Will Rogers.
Aspiring young playwright Danny Larsen (Groff) has written a stirring new play about an alcoholic black mother and her card sharp son trying to get out of the projects, and submitted it to the nation’s preeminent theater festival. The trouble is, they think it was written by “Shaleeha G’ntamobi.” When the play is accepted the lies pile up, shaky alliances are forged, and everyone dear to Danny must decide whether or not to run for cover as the whole thing threatens to blow up in his lily white face.
