The weekend is here and you know what that means...it's time for Broadway.com's weekly Lessons of the Week! Take a look below to review all the busy happenings of this week and what valuable insights they had to offer.
Sutton Foster is Finally Ready For Her TV Close-Up
Despite guest spots on TV's Flight of the Conchords and Law and Order: SVU, two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster hasn’t strayed far from the New York stage since her big break in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Mille. Now, in true Millie fashion, the Anything Goes star is packing her bags and heading to Hollywood, having landed a starring role in the ballet-themed ABC Family pilot, Bunheads. Foster is the latest in a long line of stage stars popping up on the small screen this year. Congrats on the new gig, Sutton, but please don’t leave Broadway behind for too long!
Glee's New Hunk Might Have His Eye on Darren Criss' Blaine
It gets better. Or so we thought. After a rough few months of transferring schools and weathering threats by bullies, it’s finally been smooth sailing for Glee’s Kurt (Chris Colfer) now that he’s in a steady relationship with Blaine (Darren Criss). Despite Blaine’s recent declaration of love for Kurt, it looks like their fairy-tale romance may be in danger now that West Side Story veteran Grant Gustin has been cast on the show. Gustin will play a Dalton Academy Warbler who tries to steal Blaine for himself. Uh oh! Kurt’s “Teenage Dream” could quickly become a teenage nightmare!
The Lunt-Fontanne is Broadway’s Newest Haunted Theater
The kooky Addams Family clan and their gang of ghostly ancestors are heading to their graves at the end of the year to make room for a new poltergeist posse. The musical adaptation of the Oscar-nominated film Ghost has claimed the Addams’ current home at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and will open on April 23, 2012—practically turning the theater into a haunted house! Here’s hoping a musical adaptation of Ghostbusters is on its way should all those supernatural spirits start to misbehave.
Stephen Sondheim Gives Notes Even After a Show Closes
Legendary composer Stephen Sondheim proved he’s not afraid to speak his mind after his smackdown of the upcoming Broadway production of Porgy and Bess. Turns out Sondheim also has a knack for giving even his most seasoned leading ladies notes on their performances. And he doesn't care if the show is over! Patti LuPone revealed that Sondheim critiqued the delivery of her lines at the closing night party of this spring’s Company concert. Patti’s response? “I wanted to smack him!” she joked. Violence is never the answer, Patti!
At Least One Ensemble Member Actually Read The Book of Mormon
As an ensemble member in The Book of Mormon, you’d think Clark Johnsen had spent his younger years shuttling from voice lessons to tap class and back again. But in his First Person essay, Johnsen proved there are many paths to Broadway, and his included a childhood in the Mormon Church, plus two years of missionary work in Mexico. Now Johnsen is an ex-missionary, ex-Mormon and "gay to boot." (He calls this being a "triple threat.") Oh, yeah. He can sing and dance, too.
Even the Dark Side of Follies Star Danny Burstein is Adorable
Danny Burstein, the super-talented Broadway actor currently playing a hopelessly devoted husband to a less-than-loving wife in Follies, may seem like Mr. Nice Guy. But on a recent Day in the Life photo shoot, Burstein showed some edge by exposing his tattoos. We have it on good authority that the tat on his ankle was inspired by a picture drawn by his son. Think it can’t get sweeter? His wife Rebecca Luker has matching ink. All together now: Awwww!
Wicked’s Newest Elphaba is More of a Glinda on the Inside
There’s a new green girl in town over at Wicked, as Jackie Burns joined the company as misfit witch Elphaba, along with her tour pal Chandra Lee Schwartz as Glinda. She’s all angst and ambition on stage, but it turns out Burns' own personality is bit more Glinda-like in real life. During a rehearsal room chat, Schwartz out-ed her perky co-star, saying, “Her most Elphaba-like quality is that she’s not like Elphaba at all.” She even has Glinda’s signature “toss, toss” down pat!
Christine Lahti Likes to Play Dress Up with Her Oscar
Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling star Christine Lahti has plenty of accolades to her name, including an Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe. Like any award winner, Lahti has the trophies displayed on her mantle, and thanks to Lahti’s daughter, her Oscar doesn’t live life naked. In a Q&A interview, Lahti revealed that her daughter used to dress her Emmy in Barbie outfits, while Oscar got to slip into some of Ken’s duds. Not too shabby! Let’s get Lahti a Tony and move the whole trophy family into a dreamhouse!
Original Annie Andrea McArdle Wants a Shot at Miss Hanningan on Broadway
Those darling orphans are marching back to Broadway as a revival of Annie readies for fall 2012, and original red-headed charmer Andrea McArdle has an idea for the perfect Miss Hannigan: herself! “I would love to have an audition,” McArdle recently said on Show People. McArdle, who’s previously played Miss Hannigan twice, notes she learned from the best, original star Dorothy Loudon. It's a great casting choice, but we pity the little girl who has to sing "Tomorrow" in front of the Annie icon.
Matthew Morrison Isn’t Afraid to Fight Back
Last week Moneyball star Jonah Hill humorously threatened Glee's Matthew Morrison on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon for using his name as a punch line. Not one to back down, Morrison filmed a hilarious rebuttal for the show in which he warned Hill “not to mess with someone from musical theater.” He even wants to settle the feud on Fallon’s show! Better play it cool, Jonah. Glee is working on a production of West Side Story…who knows what moves Morrison may pick up from those rumbling Sharks and Jets.
