The Book of Mormon's Tony-winning composers Trey Parker and Matt Stone revealed their plans to adapt the hit musical for the big screen earlier this fall, but re-iterated that a film version may still be a few years down the road during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"As soon as [the musical became a] hit, I was like 'Let's make the movie right now,'" Parker said, "because you want to bottle this up. But on the other hand, it's like, we spent all this time making a theater show. Do we really want to send out a movie right now?"
For now, Parker and Stone are focusing on their long-running TV series South Park, but Parker noted, "Everyone is asking us what our next big musical idea is." Their dream project? "Beowulf on Ice," according to Stone. The duo have dreamed of turning the epic Scandinavian poem into an ice skating spectacular before even creating South Park. "That would be pretty sweet," Stone said.
South Park resumes its 15th season on October 5 while The Book of Mormon continues its sold out run at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
