Broadway.com's resident artist Justin "Squigs" Robertson recently ventured to Memphis' Lorraine Motel (a.k.a. Broadway's Jacobs Theatre) to sketch Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett, the stars of Katori Hall's new play, The Mountaintop. Jackson plays Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the eve of his 1968 assassination as he sparks a conversation with Camae (Bassett), a maid at the motel. In Squigs' portrait of the famous duo, the artist captures a scene from The Mountaintop in which Camae slips into Dr. King's jacket and offers some advice about the civil rights leader's preaching style. After savoring Squigs' latest artwork, get tickets for your own trip to The Mountaintop, now in previews and set to open on October 13.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home. Click to e-mail Squigs. Photo by Matthew Murphy
