Mary Poppins veteran Laura Michelle Kelly will star in the upcoming Australian movie musical, Goddess, according the The Hollywood Reporter. Kelly will play an isolated housewife who becomes an Internet singing sensation, opposite Irish pop star Ronan Keating as her husband. The film is eyeing a summer 2012 release date.
Kelly earned an Olivier Award for originating the title role in Mary Poppins in the West End and went on to play the role on Broadway. Her other theater credits include My Fair Lady, Speed the Plow, The Lord of the Rings, Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables and Beauty and the Beast. She also appeared opposite Johnny Depp in the movie adaptation of Sweeney Todd.
Goddess is directed and co-written by Mark Lamprell and produced by Richard Keddie and Andrea Finlay.
