Bassett won a Golden Globe and earned an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of legendary R&B singer Tina Turner in the biographical film based on Turner's own memoir, I, Tina. Bassett starred opposite Laurence Fishburne as Turner's ex-husband, Ike Turner.

Bassett reunited with her What's Love Got To Do With It? co-star Laurence Fishburne in this heartwarming family drama, playing the mother of a young Los Angeles-area girl who competes in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
