Robert Lopez is joining Trey Parker and Matt Stone, his collaborators on the Tony-winning smash hit The Book of Mormon, to co-write an episode of Parker and Stone's long-running animated series South Park, according to The New York Times. The currently untitled episode will air on Comedy Central on October 26.
"To hear them say how they [write South Park], they’re always out of ideas, and they’re always looking around for crumbs," Lopez said of the intense process in which episodes are written just six days before they air. "And those crumbs turn into these great episodes. I’m really curious to watch that all happen, so I decided not bring too much with me."
Lopez had planned on collaborating with the South Park team on the series' mid-season finale, "You're Getting Old," in June, but his schedule prevented him from participating. A documentary, Six Days to Air, chronicling Parker and Stone's weekly creative process, aired earlier this month on Comedy Central.
Lopez, who is also a Tony winner for Avenue Q, has experience in animation, having penned songs for this summer's Winnie the Pooh film alongside his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez. A new song by the composer will also be featured on the 23rd season of The Simpsons.
