Another week has come and gone on the Great White Way, and as always Broadway.com scoured the recent crop of headlines to deliver you the most important lessons we learned in the last seven days. Take a look at the valuable tidbits below!
Hugh Jackman Thinks Tap Dancing is Harder Than Fighting Robots
Tony winner Hugh Jackman flexed his box office muscle with his hit robot-boxing flick Real Steel earlier this month. Now the dashing Aussie is prepping for his Great White Way return, and we asked him which is harder to pull off: fighting a hunk of metal or tap dancing with an umbrella while crooning “Singin’ in the Rain.” His response? “Tap-dancing with an umbrella, no doubt," Jackman exclaimed. "Boxing was difficult, but anyone knows eight shows a week is as rewarding and challenging as it gets.” Sorry robots, you’re no match for those dancing feet!
Mormon Man Josh Gad Tried To Be a Surfer Dude
The Book of Mormon star Josh Gad is good at many things. Surfing is not one of them. In the new MTV animated show Good Vibes, Gad voices a chubby New Jersey teenager transplanted to a surfing city in California, but the Tony nominee admitted to a less than stellar first (and last) experience with the sport in Australia. “It didn’t end well,” he said, “I came less than five inches away from cracking my head open on a rock.” Stick to the stage, Josh. It’s safer.
Sutton Foster Amps Up to Play Reno Sweeney with the Help of Satan
Sometimes even a Tony winner like Sutton Foster needs a boost, especially when playing a tough broad like Reno Sweeney in the Tony-winning revival of Anything Goes. “She’s very different than who I am,” Foster told Broadway.com during an intimate Character Study video. “She walks into a room with confidence and ease, and that’s something I struggle with.” To keep herself in a Sweeney state of mind, Foster has written words like “Bad Ass” and “Devil” in crimson lipstick on her dressing room mirror. Whatever works!
Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs’ Romance Got Off to a Sticky Start
When Idina Menzel chatted with the ladies of The Talk, she spilled romantic secrets about her original Rent co-star and now husband, Taye Diggs. While the show was still off-Broadway, Diggs developed an adorable backstage habit. “He’d leave me Post-its in my dressing room saying things like, ‘Your butt looked cute in that costume, honey,’"the Tony winner revealed. A romantic at heart, Menzel she kept them all, and while the Post-it note adhesive probably hasn’t lasted for 15 years, their love sure has!
Move Over, Wicked! Broadway Has a New Magical Origin Story
For nearly a decade, the Wizard of Oz prequel Wicked has delighted Broadway audiences with the tale of how a misunderstood teen became the Wicked Witch of the West. Now another magical origin story is soaring to the Great White Way as Peter and the Starcatcher announced plans for a Broadway run in the spring. The play recounts the story of how a young shipwrecked orphan became Peter Pan, the Neverland resident known as The Boy Who Never Grew Up. We can't wait for this fantastical play to take flight!
Wicked’s Kathy Fitzgerald is a Proud Owner of the Iconic Disney E Ticket
While today’s tourists might not be familiar with Disneyland’s once-legendary “E Tickets,” crowds at the theme park pre-1982 clamored for one of the much-coveted all-access admission tickets. The passes may be extinct now, but Wicked star Kathy Fitzgerald still treasures her framed E Ticket (which hangs framed in her dressing room) given to her by her father, who used to work as a Disney Imagineer. Who knew there was a little Disney magic helping out all of Madame Morrible's spells? Thanks, Mickey!
Jennifer Holliday is Still Smarting About the Dreamgirls Movie
The film adaptation of Dreamgirls may have hit screens five years ago, but the musical’s original Tony-winning star Jennifer Holliday still has some qualms about how the project was handled. Promoting her new album God is Faithful on The Wendy Williams Show, Holliday called out the Dreamgirls movie moguls and lamented that Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson never asked for her input when it came to playing Effie White, the sassy, belting diva at the center of the story. Effie, we all got pain. Move on!
Hunter Parrish Has Magic Hands
Even on Broadway, Jesus is thinking of his fellow man. Weeds’ Hunter Parrish has plenty of responsibilites starring as a savior in the revival of Godspell, but in the most recent episode of Telly Leung's video blog, ’Godspell’ According to Telly, Parrish seemed more concerned with making sure his co-stars were at ease than his own well-being. The Broadway messiah doled out massages to his fellow cast members before they took the stage. Sounds amazing! Hey Hunter, do you take appointments?
Rachel Griffiths Likes a Happy Ending
She’s played a lot of intense ladies on screen, but in real life, Other Desert Cities star Rachel Griffiths prefers stories with an uplifting ending. “I’m more of a King’s Speech girl than The Road,” she said in a Q&A, “I don’t want to be put through two hours of dense drama just to have a toilet lid banged on my head at the end, you know?” We don't blame you Rachel, but the engrossing Other Desert Cities isn't quite rainbows, puppies and lollipops!
Follies Standout Danny Burstein Is Hopelessly In Love
It’s been 11 years since Follies leading man Danny Burstein married fellow Broadway star Rebecca Luker, but the actor still gets emotional when talking about his better half. During a visit to Show People, Burstein got teary-eyed as he recounted their courtship while working on the Barry Manilow musical Harmony. “She has completely transformed my life,” he gushed, “my wife is an amazing person. I get too emotional!” It’s good to know Burstein found "The Right Girl." Yeah!
