Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who know a thing or two about rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share their memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore. Read on for inspiration, and Happy Halloween!
MARLA MINDELLE (Sister Mary Robert in Sister Act)
What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
I went as a "GORGYLE!" last year [pictured above] based on Marguerite Perrin's rant from the TV Show Trading Spouses. She screams "GORGYLES! SLYKICS!!!" a.k.a. gargoyles and psychics. It's a staple phrase amongst many people I know. Broadway's Nancy Opel constructed my costume too! What a triple threat.
What’s the most embarrassing Halloween costume you ever wore?
I went as "Captain Good" around kindergarten, which was a cartoon character no one has ever heard of. So not only did I go as something completely unrecognizable, I also wore only stockings with a T-shirt and cape. Not leggings. Just your run of the mill control-top stockings.
What’s your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
Plain M&Ms. They're my favorite year-round candy.
What’s the worst “treat” you were ever given on Halloween?
A pamphlet about accepting Christ. Unfortunately, it wasn't made out of chocolate.
Have you ever dressed up as a Broadway character? If so, which one?
No. However, choreographer Connor Gallagher and I went as a musical theater majors from Boston Conservatory when we were sophmores at CCM. We thought it was funny, but we pissed off some people from BOCO.
What is your favorite Halloween horror movie, and why?
Hocus Pocus. I don't like scary movies. But I do love Sarah Jessica Parker getting punched in the stomach while screaming "A muck! A muck!"
What do you think is the hottest Broadway-themed costume for 2011?
A Times Square Chicago-themed Flyer Passer Outer.
What is your Halloween costume this year?
My friends and I love to take a category and add "slutty" in front of it. Last year we went as "slutty" endangered species. This year we are going as "slutty" restaurant row. So I'm slutty Village Pour House.
What do you love most about Halloween?
Looking at the models in costume catalogs and seeing how they try to pose sexily while wearing the most outrageous costumes, like a giant rainbow or a slutty pirate. Also all the Halloween-themed shows on Food Network and Nickelodeon.
