Between scandalous convent members, celebrity super fans and Broadway weddings, it's a lot to keep up with. Need a reminder of what's been going on online lately? Read on for our recap of the top 10 lessons from the week!
Wicked is Trey Parker’s Favorite Musical
The Book of Mormon may be full of plenty of raunchy expletive-filled jokes, but it turns out its creators have a soft spot for a family-friendly musical. “Wicked is Trey [Parker’s] favorite musical hands down,” Mormon co-composer Robert Lopez revealed after wrapping a Broadway-themed episode of Parker and Matt Stone’s hit TV series South Park. How far will Parker, who donned Jennifer Lopez's iconic emerald-hued Versace gown at the 2000 Oscars, go to show his Elphie love? Perhaps he'll go green again this Halloween!
Sister Act’s Marla Mindelle Can Make Anything Slutty
When it comes to Halloween costumes, Sister Act standout Marla Mindelle, who plays Sister Mary Robert, sure knows how to turn heads. “My friends and I love to take a category and add ‘slutty’ in front of it,” Mindelle said of her Halloween plans. “Last year we went as ‘slutty’ endangered species. This year we are going as ‘slutty’ Restaurant Row.” Wow Marla, we can’t even imagine how many Hail Maryss Mother Superior will be assigning you for that! Better pull out that rosary and get to work!
Alice Ripley Needs More Memory on Her iPhone
Fans of Broadway star Alice Ripley have come to love her kooky YouTube offerings, including her infamous “Peppermint Twist” video. But the Next to Normal Tony winner has been noticeably absent from the web for a while, and on this week's episode of Show People, Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek found out why: “My phone is full! I can’t fit any more videos.” Ripley revealed. “That’s why I haven’t made any in a while. The iPhone camera is key.” Hey Alice, ever heard of a delete button?
Marc Kudisch Makes Good on His Promises
The Blue Flower star Marc Kudisch tied the knot with his fiancée, How to Succeed’s Shannon Lewis, earlier this week in Key West, FL. It was quite the long trip down the aisle for the couple, who have been together for nine years. Kudisch promised Broadway.com last May that “we’re going to get married by the end of the year…come hell or high water.” The man sticks to his word! “We feel very loved,” Lewis said of their beachside nuptials. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
Off-Broadway’s Sleep No More is a Celebrity Magnet
Audiences at off-Broadway’s Sleep No More are required to wear Venetian masks as they scope out the interactive action of the Macbeth-inspired spectacle. Looks like out there have been plenty of famous faces donning disguises lately. Not only did Grammy winner Pink show up at the McKittrick Hotel recently to perform “Summertime” alongside a cast member, but TV’s Gossip Girl is even dedicating an entire episode to the hit production. Forget the red carpet, the place to be “spotted” is now at Sleep No More!
Some Like it Hot…Including Priscilla’s J. Elaine Marcos
Scene-stealer J. Elaine Marcos shows off plenty of skin in Priscilla Queen of the Desert as Cynthia, a housewife with a titillating secret talent. Even with the white hot spotlights of the Palace Theatre beaming down on her each night, Marcos still seems to always catch a chill backstage. To combat the cold, Marcos has stocked her dressing room with creative contraptions including a shiny “sauna suit” and comfy heating pad. There are plenty of catchy disco tunes in Priscilla, but we bet Macros favorite is “Hot Stuff.”
Will Chase is Going to Stir Up Trouble on Smash
Billy Elliot veteran Will Chase has joined the team of NBC’s Broadway-centric series Smash as Michael Swift, an actor cast as Joe DiMaggio in a musical about Marilyn Monroe’s life. While the character is married (his wife is played by Wicked alum Michelle Federer), Chase hinted he might be a bit of a philanderer. “You can expect Michael to stir the pot a bit,” he said of his character’s storyline. “He might become a love interest for one of the other main characters.” Scandalous!
Reeve Carney Wants a Break from Being a Hero
He plays the ultimate good guy on the Broadway stage, but Spider-Man star Reeve Carney is ready to explore his dark side. On a recent episode of Broadway.com’s Ask a Star, a fan asked Carney which current co-star he’d most want to switch roles with for a night. His answer? Spidey’s arch-nemesis, The Green Goblin! OK Reeve, but just remember: the bad guy never gets the girl!
The Book of Mormon’s Josh Gad is the Ultimate Multi-Tasker
You’d think eight shows a week in a Tony-winning musical would be enough work, but for The Book of Mormon’s Josh Gad taking the stage each night is only one item on a very long to-do list. Gad is also currently headlining the MTV series Good Vibes, filming the sex-addict comedy Thanks For Sharing, penning a TV pilot alongside Will Ferrell and just sold another TV project, 1600 Penn, to NBC. Oh, and did we mention he also has a 10-month-old daughter? When do you find time to sleep, Josh?!
Cher is a Die-hard Phantom of the Opera Fan
Show tunes were blasting in the ballroom during Dancing with the Stars’ “Broadway Week” episode. For his number, Chaz Bono suited up as the title charmer of The Phantom of the Opera and revealed his famous mama (Cher, of course) is a huge fan of Broadway’s longest running musical. Bono has seen Phantom three times. Though Bono was eliminated from the dance competition, he says he’s setting his sights on Broadway. Maybe he’ll give Cher a reason to catch Phantom yet again by starring in the show!
