The much-talked-about revival of Porgy and Bess will get the new year off to an exciting start on Broadway. Tickets are now on sale for the Gershwins’ operatic musical, which will feature Norm Lewis and four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald in the title roles. Diane Paulus’ production will begin previews on December 17 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with opening night set for January 12, 2012.
Porgy and Bess centers on the star-crossed romance between Porgy, who lives in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina, and his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her pimp, and Sportin’ Life (Tony nominee David Alan Grier), a drug dealer. With music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward, the musical features the classics “Summertime,” “Bess, You Is My Woman Now,” “I Got Plenty o’ Nothin’,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”
Fans of musical theater are eagerly awaiting the Broadway return of McDonald in this iconic role. Get tickets now to see her in Porgy and Bess!
