After a successful recent reading, a musical adaptation of Honeymoon in Vegas may be headed to Broadway in the 2012-13 season, according to the New York Post. The stage version, based on the 1992 Nicolas Cage-Sarah Jessica Parker film of the same name, features music by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade) and a book by Andrew Bergman, who wrote the original screenplay.
In the film Honeymoon in Vegas, commitment-phobe Jack Singer (Cage) finally proposes to his girlfriend Betsy (Parker), and they decide to get hitched in Vegas. But a wealthy gambler (James Caan) falls for Betsy and arranges for Jack to lose big in a poker game so he can offer to clear the debt in exchange for a weekend with Jack’s fiancée. Hijinks ensue.
The recent reading, directed by Gary Griffin (The Color Purple), reportedly starred T.R. Knight as Jack with How to Succeed’s Mary Faber as his fiancée Betsy and Tony Danza as the gambler.
Honeymoon in Vegas is being produced by Dena Hammerstein.
