We’re taking stock of this week on Broadway a little early, in honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, but even when the weeks are short there are plenty of lessons to learn! Below, our look back at this eventful, abridged week on Broadway.
Daniel Radcliffe Knows Nothing about Women’s Underwear
He’s an international movie star and a bona fide Broadway hoofer, but Broadway.com has discovered a chink in Daniel Radcliffe’s multi-talented armor: Doing laundry. How do we know? Side by Side host Susan Blackwell took the How to Succeed star to her home for an apartment-cleaning session (naturally) and when confronted with laundering Blackwell’s underoos (naturally), Radcliffe drew a big blank. Though he might ruin her bra with improper technique, Radcliffe agreed to buy Blackwell a puppy made of diamonds. Let's call it square.
Grease is Not the Word for Stockard Channing
For musical theater lovers worldwide, Stockard Channing became the definitive Rizzo in Grease when she immortalized the sexy, tough-as-nails Pink Lady on the silver screen. But the Other Desert Cities star isn’t quite as enamored of the film as her fans are. “Saw it when it came out, saw it when it came out again,” Channing told Broadway.com recently. “Twice. That’s all.” Don’t worry, Stockard, we’ve watched it enough for everyone.
Alan Rickman Is Sexier than Hugh Jackman
Choosing Broadway’s Sexiest Man Alive is a tough job, but Broadway.com’s readers were up to the challenge. The winner of our recent poll? Seminar’s silver fox Alan Rickman. He took home 27% of the vote, narrowly edging out mega-hunk Hugh Jackman. It's no surprise that Rickman, a two-time Tony nominee, who is playing a celebrated author and teacher, is getting a serious amount of on stage action. After playing the repellent Professor Snape in eight Harry Potter movies, he’s earned it.
Sondheim Is Also a Softie
He’s already made our headlines for his unabashed badass-ery, but in his new book Look, I Made a Hat legendary composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim reveals his softer side. “Once during the writing of each show, I cry at a notion, a word, a chord, a melodic idea, an accompaniment figure,” he said. Lest you think the man is just moved by his own genius, he admits that the waterworks aren’t uncommon for him. “But then I cry at Animal Planet,” he went on. “Often.” All together now: Awww!
Andrew Rannells Will Never Talk to Taylor Swift
We didn’t think it was possible, but there is something that The Book of Mormon star Andrew Rannells won’t do: Talk to pop country star Taylor Swift. The singer’s name came up in a spirited game of word association on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, and this was Rannells’ kneejerk response: “Don’t talk to Taylor Swift ‘cause she’ll put it in a song!” he jokingly advised fellow guest Ellen Barkin. “Don’t ever talk to her about anything.” Glad to you know you have some boundaries, Andrew.
Rebecca Faulkenberry Didn’t Speak Comic Book
When auditioning for the role of Mary Jane in Spider-Man, Turn off the Dark, Rebecca Faulkenberry visited a comic book store to see just how much she didn’t know. “It’s a whole other language that I don’t speak!” exclaimed Faulkenberry, who took a comic book-fan friend along for guidance. “I was just like, “What? I don’t get what you’re saying! I just want pictures and references!” she joked. Not to worry, Spidey-lovers, now that she’s sharing a stage with the web-slinger eight times a week, Faulkenberry will be fluent in no time.
Marc Kudisch Thinks The Blue Flower is Like Pineapple on Pizza
Broadway vet Marc Kudisch, who is currently starring in The Blue Flower at Second Stage Theatre, found an amazing way to describe the show’s unusual musical score. “It’s just sound that you put together and it makes absolute sense,” he said, before offering up an awesome comparison. “When somebody first decided to put pineapple on a pizza, you think, 'That’s stupid,' he said, before miming a bite and letting his eyes light up, “Heeeyyy!” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves, Marc.
Private Lives Will Get You Laid
For Broadway lovers an evening at the theater is its own reward, but an evening with Private Lives may come with a little something extra. According to star Paul Gross, the Noel Coward romantic comedy about a pair of warring lovers, is good for your sex life. “You’ll be headed to the car or the train and you’ll start to argue,” Gross told Broadway.com about audience members after the show. “You’ll get into a huge fight, then you’ll go home and have fantastic sex.” Best. Sales pitch. Ever.
Mark Consuelos Swings (Well, Smooches) Both Ways
Mark Consuelos is currently starring off-Broadway in Standing on Ceremony where he is locking lips with co-star Craig Bierko. “I didn’t know about the kiss until I took the job,” admitted Consuelos, who was also flying to Los Angeles to film the FOX series I Hate My Teenage Daughter while performing off-Broadway. “So in 12 hours I went from kissing Craig Bierko to getting on a plane, and then having the hard thing of kissing Jaime Pressley.” Now that’s what we call nice work if you can get it.
Kim Cattrall Could Even Make Seinfeld's Kramer Sexy
People always play the “Which Sex and the City character are you?” game, but what about the show’s stars themselves? When SATC alum and Private Lives star Kim Cattrall sat down on Live with Kelly Ripa and her current co-host, Jerry Seinfeld, she got a casting session of a different sort. “You were kind of the Kramer of the show,” Seinfeld said, equating Cattrall to the eccentric neighbor played by Michael Richard on his '90s sitcom. “Sexy Kramer!” Ripa quickly qualified. Sexy Kramer? Well, if anyone could do it, it’d be Cattrall.
