The Book of Mormon took home a whopping nine Tony Awards back in June, and the hit musical continues to score accolades, including a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Cast Album. Broadway.com chatted with Tony-winning Mormon co-composers Robert Lopez and Trey Parker shortly after receiving the big news.
“I’m pretty excited,” said Lopez, who previously earned a 2004 Grammy nomination for Avenue Q’s cast recording. “I never thought being in what might be considered the squarest area of music might get me anywhere near the Grammys.”
While Parker is also happy with the nod, he has his eyes set on a larger prize: “I need to get my fucking Oscar that I lost to Phil Collins,” he said with a laugh, referring to the 2000 Academy Awards, when “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut lost to Tarzan’s “You’ll Be in My Heart.” “If I can win the Grammy, then I just need an Oscar and I’ll be an EGOT winner. But Phil Collins fucked me!” [Parker has four Emmy Awards for South Park.]
So does Parker have a game plan for obtaining EGOT status? “Well, we could get the Grammy and then we could make The Book of Mormon movie and get an Oscar for that, but I don’t really think that’s fair,” he mused. “If all the awards are for the same thing, I don’t think it should count. But if that’s how I end up getting it, I’ll totally think it counts.”
Parker plans to attend the Grammy Awards on February 12, 2012, but isn’t expecting anything too glamorous from the night. “I’ll be there, for sure, at P.F. Chang’s or wherever they do our ceremony,” he said with a laugh, noting that his category will not be shown during the Grammy telecast. “They’ll be giving out the rest of the awards and I’ll enjoy the P.F. Chang’s buffet.”
The Book of Mormon continues to run at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
