The first-ever Broadway mounting of The Road to Mecca, the gripping South African drama by Athol Fugard, begins previews on December 16 at the American Airlines Theatre. Starring Tony winners Rosemary Harris and Jim Dale and stage and screen star Carla Gugino, the Roundabout Theatre production will officially open on January 17, 2012.
Based on a true story, The Road to Mecca tells the tale of Helen Martins (Harris), a brilliant and eccentric woman who, after her husband’s death, converts her home into a glittering work of art. Local pastor Marius Byleveld (Dale) attempts to save Helen by whisking her off to an old age home, while liberal schoolteacher Elsa (Gugino) insists that Helen should stay put in her homemade wonderland. The Road to Mecca made its New York premiere at off-Broadway's Promenade Theatre in 1988, starring Fugard himself as Byleveld.
