Casting is complete for the West End transfer of Terrence McNally’s Master Class. As previously announced Tony winner Tyne Daly will reprise her starring role as Maria Callas for London audiences. Directed by Stephen Wadsworth, Master Class will begin performances at the Vaudeville Theatre on January 21, 2012 and continue through April 28.
Joining Daly are Gerard Carey (Spamalot) as the Stagehand, Naomi O’Connell (Transformations) as Sharon Graham, Dianne Pilkington (Wicked) as Sophie De Palma and Garrett Sorenson (Salome) as Anthony Candolino. Jeremy Cohen, who appeared with Daly during Master Class' Broadway run earlier this year, will reprise his role as Emmanuel Weinstock.
Master Class centers on real-life music icon Callas (Daly), who began teaching opera hopefuls after her own singing career ended. Callas dared the next generation of singers to make the same sacrifices and rise to the same heights that made her the most celebrated, reviled and controversial singer of her time.
The original production of Master Class won 1996 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Actress (Zoe Caldwell as Callas) and Best Featured Actress (Audra McDonald). The recent Broadway production, produced by Manhattan Theatre Club and starring Daly, ran from June 14 to September 4.
London’s Master Class will include set design by Thomas Lynch, costume design by Martin Pakledinaz, lighting by David Lander, sound by Jon Gottlieb and wigs by Paul Huntley.
